Patti Smith receives ASCAP honor
ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, is presenting Patti Smith with a lifetime achievement award to honor her 40-year career as a singer-songwriter, as well as poet, activist, painter, and most recently, author.
Smith, now 63, has been dubbed the “Godmother of Punk” because of the part she played in the 70s punk scene. Some of that role is described in her recent autobiography Just Kids, which details her relationship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe in 1970’s New York City.
The award is being presented on April 21st during the 27th annual Pop Music Awards dinner in Hollywood, Calif., at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel. Smith will be there to accept the award and perform with her band.
